Alice Cooper Theatre of Death DVD shows him dying once again. As a matter of fact, he has made his living dying. Alice Cooper (Vincent Damon Furnier) is now 60 years old with 40 of those years doing hard rock and roll. I would have thought he was another past-their-timers-still-performing performer. After watching this DVD I can tell you that Alice Cooper is doing it better than ever. I saw his show in the early ‘80’s. This DVD is basically the same show but more elaborate now, better costumes, better props and much, much better sound. This is a very entertaining show. This is theater with tight rock and roll performances. Lead guitarist, Irwin Thomas is a precision shredder, as professional as any, anywhere. Yes, they are older, but no tired-old-I-hope-I-can-make-it-through-performances here. From the opening power cords of “School’s Out” (his first hit) to the credits at the end of this DVD, is theater at it’s best with guillotines, stripteasing nurses, a huge syringe, a sword, big-bastard balloons, straitjackets, misogynistic ghouls and other Halloween-type foolishness, is really a theatrical smorgasbord of acts to fit the songs. “Billion Dollar Babies” is where he throws pearls, or diamonds, before swine, which are us, his groping audience. Hell becomes a tourist attraction. He declares it, “for criminal acts and violence on the stage, for being a brat, refusing to act your age, for all the decent citizens you’ve enraged, you can go to hell.” Yes, the blood spurts from Alice’s many times pierced body, in one of his many dramatic death scenes. He is executed twice within the first half-hour. All the hits are there, “Department of Youth,” and another early song, “I’m Eighteen” off 1971’s Love It To Death, “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “Welcome To My Nightmare,” and the heavy blues of “Under My Wheels,” one of the best songs off his classic album, Killer. His voice is still strong and aged like fine wine, evidenced on “Only Women Bleed.” Alice Cooper’s Theatre Of Death DVD, which was recorded live at London’s Hammersmith Apollo, needless to say, is a DVD not for everyone. For you that enjoy theater wrapped around rock and roll, this DVD will be perfect.
