ALICE COOPER
Welcome 2 My Nightmare (Universal)
Releasing a sequel album is always a risky proposition and even riskier when the first disc was released over thirty-five years ago and is considered a masterpiece by the rock community, but Alice Cooper has never backed away from a musical challenge and fans can rejoice as the veteran rocker and Canadian-born producer Bob Ezrin have created an equally comparable chef d’oeuvre. Stealing musical motifs from the first Nightmare album, Cooper takes his fans on a musical journey through his best work of the ‘70s. 'A Runaway Train' is a long lost cousin to 'Ubangi Stomp' (from Lace & Whiskey). 'Last Man On Earth' features a sneering Cooper vocal and feels like it was lifted straight out of a Vaudeville show while 'Disco Bloodbath Boogie Fever' (witty lyrics and all) sounds like a 2011 update of the Cooper classic 'Clones (We’re All)'. Pop starlet, KE$HA, shares the mic with The Coop on 'What Baby Wants' for a strangely entertaining Alice dance tune (think KISS’ 'I Was Made For Lovin’ You', but with tongue firmly planted in cheek). 'The Underture' closes out the album with snippets (a megamix if you will) of the original 'Welcome To My Nightmare', 'Only Women Bleed', 'Black Widow' and more. The reuniting of the members of the original Alice Cooper band (Neal Smith, Michael Bruce, and Dennis Dunaway) can only be described as ‘magical’. While original Nightmare band member, Dick Wagner, is the ‘cherry-on-top’. In all, Welcome 2 My Nightmare is Cooper’s best and most consistent work since 1975 and will reignite the passion in long-time fans.
Recorded with longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin (PINK FLOYD, KISS), who produced the original multi-platinum Welcome To My Nightmare album in 1975, the album picks up right where they left off, with Alice trapped in his own warped mind.
The original Welcome To My Nightmare release is an all-time rock classic that spawned a worldwide theatrical tour and pioneering U.S. TV special, and certified Alice Cooper as a visionary trailblazer whose influence persists today in rock, metal, pop, punk, theatre, television, film and much more.
More than 35 years later, Alice and Ezrin have resurrected the horror and humor for a new generation.
"This is Alice's nightmare 35 years later," explains Alice in a press release, "Bob and I created this character and we know how to write for him. I play the part but we're not writing for me, we're writing for Alice. We kept the first Nightmare album very personal to us, on this one we found more humor and we were more open. This was our world and we want to present it to the fans. The original album was my first solo album after all those huge hit records with the original band and now that nightmare is exposed, this one can be a little bit more open. The music crosses all sorts of boundaries; we went where the lyrics took us."
There is an array of collaborators on the new album, including original Alice Cooper members Denis Dunaway, Michael Bruce and Neal Smith reunited on 3 tracks; global pop superstar Ke$ha, who affectionately calls Alice "dad"; and legendary Alice and Lou Reed guitarist Steve Hunter, who is part of Alice's current touring band and featured prominently on the first Nightmare album.
Musically, the album ranges far and wide, from trashing disco to garage punk, pop balladry to a rocking number, very much in the spirit of the Rolling Stones. And then there's the ballad "Something To Remember Me By," described by Alice as "the prettiest song we have ever released."
Glimpses of themes from the original album are intertwined throughout, each track representing a different aspect of Alice's nightmare.
From the opener, "I Am Made Of You," through the already established live favorite and first single "I'll Bite Your Face Off," to the surprising duet with Ke$ha, "What Baby Wants," this album is a reminder that albums just aren't made this way anymore.
And musicians do not play together like Dennis Dunaway, Michael Bruce and Neal Smith anymore.
"I wanted a '70s feel for 'When Hell Comes Home,' says Alice, "and I didn't even have to ask for it, it's just how they play and they did it live in the studio. When they got done playing the basic track, Bob and I just looked at each other, that sound is built into their DNA. We didn't need to go and fix anything. The way they finished was a little bit ragged, and that's the way we used to finish songs, that's what I like about it."
Co-writers on various songs include the aforementioned Bob Ezrin, Ke$ha, Dunaway, Bruce and Smith, plus BUCKCHERRY's Keith Nelson, Desmond Child (who famously co-wrote and produced 'Poison' with Alice), longtime collaborator Dick Wagner, current touring band member Chuck Garric, and film composer Jeremy Rubolino.
"That's my rebellion," says Alice of the more surprising guests, "I like people that don't belong and yet what they're doing works perfectly. I don't care where it comes from, as long as it's right. If you tell me something doesn't work, I'll work my head off until it does then shove it down your throat."
"I think a lot of my audience is going to go 'KE$HA!?', but she probably wrote the most wicked lyrics in the song – we had to rein her in. I like people to know that just because artists are put in a pigeon hole, that doesn't mean that's what they are. Give people a little room."
With Steve Hunter, one of rock's great guitarists, added to the band's lineup of guitarists Damon Johnson and Tommy Henriksen, bassist Chuck Garric, and drummer Glen Sobel, Alice has been tearing up venues worldwide on his 2011 "No More Mr. Nice Guy" tour.
Alice gave fans an up close and highly personal experience in June with a surprise performance at London's legendary 100 Club, when actor Johnny Depp joined the band on guitar. Alice showcased the powerful band that had blown away the Download Festival crowd the previous weekend.
This year, the original Alice Cooper group was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, and Alice was honored with both the Kerrang! Icon Award in the UK and the Revolver Golden God Award in the US.

To the clown who slammed the original "Niightmare" album as not being hard edged enough... dude, ir didn't have to be. It was fun! It was addictively catchy and fun. Certain rock purists miss the whole point of music... it's not always required to grind away for some cult like following. Music is escapism. Sure, it can have meaningful commentary, but Alice has always known that it's about entertainment and fun... thus the sly humor he always inserts.
GET ANDREW LLOYD WEBER ON THE PHONE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!
You know on listening to this latest offering
I really feel it combined with the original nightmare this so easily merits the west end musical treatment,
I doubt Alice would have the time to commit to a full blown on going event such as this
but maybe they would get a great rock singer actor to play his character through out the production,
these stories paint such pictures they deserves to be held up to a wider audience to show their genius.
Like The who with Tommy , Elton with billy elliot , Abba with Mama Mia ,Queen will will rock you
if Madness and Boy george can do it , then it would be a breeze for coopers spellbinding talent.
Of course there is a question of getting bums on seats but if they can queue for phantom and macbeth
then surely Alice and his nightmare isn't so far removed with the right kind of publicity!!
Wow What a show this could be.....
More important to us at the moment what a tour this will be, another one to go down in rock N roll history
like its predecessor.
Hey I'm even hearing Michael Jackson beat it guitar work in "What baby wants" you've gotta hand it to this guy
he's got his musical talons in ever genera of the business I really hope this one makes it to an extra large audience coz it really does deserves it!!
John wicked youngman.
in keeping with what the guy said above this is what I have to say after hearing the new Album in full for the first time........
Alice I've been a major fan since 1972 and I have to say I couldn't be more proud of you if i tried, thank you so much for a fantastic Album I always love what you do but this has gotta be the best overall
piece of work in a while, obviously I love all your 70's classics "killer" "love it" "billion" "nightmare" "goes to hell"...... I love "dirty diamonds" , "raise your first and yell" , "last temptation" but this is on the same level as "from the inside" in respect of it being so easily accessible straight away, it rocks , the music it so diverse great lyrics (funny as hell in places)... and what an array of vocal styles pure genius!!
its a classic with out a doubt and I think you'll pick up a whole different section of fans if this gets enough air play , I'll treasure this for ever and I'll love it to death.... thanks

Your critisism shows your lack of depth. What person on Earth wants to hear the same old formula repeated over and over? The original ACB band was great, however I find that Alice became the genius he is after 1974. This was due to his wiilingness to explore new ideas. Without his taking chances we would have never had Goes To Hell, Special Forces and the masterpiece Dada. Each of these albums was truly original and sound as fresh today as they did when originally released. Are you saying that you wanted Alice to produce the same type of music/product from 1974 to 2011? I am happy to hear a 61 year old ALice sing Eighteen as I am to hear him sing Clones as I am to hear him sing Some Folks and King Of The Silver Screen. We are all hapy that he is still singing . If I were in his shoes I'd tell people like you to Oink Off and I'd retire to Bali H'ai.
a lifes long ambition just realised Alice Cooper finally played Belfast. i had butterflies in my stomach days before the gig. me and my sister were behaving like children on christmas eve. Alice Cooper did not let us down it was all i had dreamed of. cant wait for the new album to be released. i think i have worn out The Eyes of Alice Cooper and Brutal Planet. cant get enough xx
when the Cd is out around the world? thank you I´m from mexico city.
when will the friends of mr. nelson be told the truth?
Cheers Devon, Kane Roberts is my fav Alice guitarist especially ''Raise your fist and yell'' i wished for many a decade when Kane would return!! i hope we get some of them psychotic solo's he was known for!!!! lookin forward even more now...
I think that everyone will be taken aback,by the album and the fact that this man still has the power- and who gave it to him? Alice look forward to this and Goes To Hell II,gotta love a man, that gigs, has a radio show, plays golf, and if he wanted could be Governor of Arizona- hell maybe even President.

cant wait for the COOP to rock Reading.Pa!!! its gonna be one HELL of a show!!! THE NIGHTMARE RETURNS LONG LIVE THE COOP!!!!

Thanks for fixing the stupid filter on Dick Wagner's name! :)
It's been reported that Kane apparently is on it, David J.
Lookin Forward To the new album...just wished Kane Roberts was involved somewhere in the writing and playin, but great to have a sequel to nightmare!
Honestly...It seems you could create a masterpiece and some guy in his basement will be telling you why its not...Actually I found Alice kinda late I suppose...around the " Zipper catches skin" era and worked my way backwards....There is a real brilliance to his songwriting and creativity that appears lost on some. I saw him last night In Conn and to even be able to string together the diverse set he played is amazing. " Brutal Planet" ( My personal fav) "clones" "Hey Stupid", " Halo of flies" It was a reminder to me just how gifted an artist he is...I'll buy anything he puts out..sure I'll like some better than others..but truthfully all of it has the feel of an artist..not just a rocker.
I can't imagine this album being anything but great. I play Alice Cooper's most recent albums as much, if not more, than anything from the 1970s. It's a given. It'll be in my CD collection the day I see it at a store - just like each of the last 15 or so CDs.
I won't have any high expetations.. I really hope it is good though but I will be very surprised that it will be THAT good... I love many albums from Alice... Hey stoopid, the last temptation, billion.. Killer.. but the latest three were not that good to be honest (spider album was ok but not more...)
Alice still kicks ass on stage... I really hope that he will come back to Sweden again next year.
I just wish my brother lived to see this all happening.. Alice was his favorite and he got me into him.. Thank God!! Alice deserves all this and more!! I hope the CD is a great sucess.
WE WANT TO LISTEN TO A PREVIEW OF THIS RECORD! CANT WAIT ANYMORE!!!!!
Still have my original Welcome to My Nightmare album plus some awesome pics from that concert in 1975 in Houston, Texas. It had been many years since I have seen Alice in concert but last year at the Verizon Theater in GP, Texas was an awesome concert as usual. I had made two poster of pics from the 75 concert & Shep was kind enough to give Alice one for me plus Alice signed the other & Shep gave that to me. It's now framed & hanging on my office wall at hom.e THANKS SHEP & ALICE!!! I hope at the next concert, I have what is needed to get back stage & meet Alice.
Three tracks with the original members makes it worth the purchase right there. Welcome to my nightmare was a great record, though I always missed the grit if the Original line up. I was 14 When I was given Muscle of Love for Christmas, I bought every original Alice Cooper record after that starting with love it to death and upwards. Alice is my all time favorite artist I loved quirky new wave stuff Clones etc. Never taking himself too seriously and always having fun, that for me is what rock is all about. Long live the Coop!!
Take the darn filter off this website so D I C K Wagner's name isn't censored!!!! Thats not cool....
Just enjoy that Alice is still performing live and putting out records.
Just enjoy that Alice is still performing live and putting out records.
As a MASSIVE Alice fan I,
One, hope Ke$ha does not make anything poppy.
Two, am overly excited for this.
And three, doubt it, or anything else will feel like the original Nightmare. I do however, hope I'm dead wrong. I would love if the two felt like they were written together. I just don't see it happening. I do however, know that I will love this album regardless. After all, Alice is KING.
So excited here!
This review is frightening! It appears that this is as uneven as his career! Ezrin is stuck in his glory days ( Alice and Bob) have proved themselves " but WTMN1, was a weak LP...dept of youth, escape are as relevant to rock n roll as the banana splits! the tittle track was very good, but lacked a hard edge, only women , made me fall asleep, the steven trilogy was brilliant! and only cold ethel had any real rock n roll venom. Sorry, I am 51 year fan, and this has my stomach turning. its bad enough a 61 year old man is singing im 18, BOB, you should have picked Billion dollar Babies to resurrect, after all, this economy is more frightening than a plastic spider.
This is going to be so much fun! Can't wait!! :D
No Steven or Years Ago follow up !!!
I remember the original Nightmare tour as though it was yesterday - a great show from a great showman. Looking forward to this album - I'm sure it'll be a "Killer"!
This will probably be a great record. Shame that you advertise bull like Ke$ha but can't write Dick Wagner's name properly in the net.
Risky, yes, but since we've recently lost Jani Lane, it's nice to see some of the "classics" coming back.
